Panacur C is commonly sold in pet shops as a canine de wormer and is also used to worm larger animals such as cattle. The active ingredient fenbendazole has long been known as an effective method of controlling planaria worm and nerite snails in aquariums.
An effective treatment should be conducted over 3 days with 2 separate doses on day 1 and day 3. Within 24 hours of dose 2 – pretty much all of the planaria will be dead.
Fenbendazole is fish safe when used within recommended parameters as per the dose information quoted below; but is also lethal to some species of snails and or shrimp. If you are in doubt, it is recommended that you avoid fenbendazole and use praziquantel instead.
WARNING – The mass death of anything in your aquarium WILL cause ammonia levels to spike and needs to be death with by way of water change and supplemental dosages with nitrifying bacteria followed by enzyme based booster such as Pond-N-Zyme.
1. Remove all chemical filtration
2. Add powder to affected tank at a rate of 0.1grams per 38 Litres of Aquarium water.
3. Wait 48 hours and repeat the dose.
This will kill your Planaria.
** BEWARE – killing large volumes of anything in your aquarium will release ammonia into your water. Water change is recommended between doses and after treatment. You may consider rehoming any fish you have until the Fenbendazole for the eradication of Planaria worm and snails (particularly Nerite Snails and Malaysian Trumpets).
