Black Soldier Fly Larvae Replaces Fish Meal

Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) have been around for a while now as an alternative source of protein for livestock like pigs and chickens.  I am really excited by the potential of BSF to replace fish meal in aquaculture applications.

Fish meal, for those that don’t realise is made primarily by raping our oceans of any fish that can be netted and mincing them up to use as food for the fish we keep.  It’s not an ethical or sustainable practice but has been relied on for many years as a high protein, low fat staple for our fish pellets.

BSFL like fish meal has high levels of protein and low levels of Mono Unsaturated fats.  The Mono unsaturated fats it does have are high in Omega 3 and Omega 6.  It is rich in Amino acids and best of all it is a sustainable and cheap food produced in a circular process that converts green waste while producing high grade fertilizer and self-replicating larvae.

The Black Soldier Flies eat our kitchen waste and give us fertilizer and BSFL as well!

A 16 week trial of BSF as a replacement was conducted recently which found that replacing fish meal with Larvae meal did not affect the growth parameters or the whole body composition of the Atlantic Salmon tested.  It had no negative effect on the liver traits of the subjects or quality of the fillets and was found to be made of a nutritionally appropriate source of protein.  Read the full study here https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0044848618322208
